A simple native Mac app for reading and editing Markdown.
Choose File → Open or press ⌘O. Select a .md or .markdown file saved as UTF-8. You can also open a file with Markopen from Finder.
Read formats your document. Live lets you edit with Markdown styling. Edit shows plain Markdown source. The toolbar switches between these modes.
Use the outline button to see headings. Select a heading to jump to it. Press ⌘F to search within your document.
Markopen uses native autosave. Press ⌘S to save, or choose File → Save As to save a copy. Press ⌘Z to undo an edit.
Task checkboxes also change your file when you use Read mode. Undo reverses those changes.
YAML frontmatter appears in a metadata card. Live mode lets you edit it. Images appear as descriptions and links rather than embedded previews.
Check that the document contains UTF-8 text. If a linked document needs permission, select it in the Mac's file picker.
For help, feedback, or a bug report, email Ryder Wishart. Include your macOS version and the steps that show the issue.
Markopen requires macOS 13 or later and supports Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
